Abstract

A questionnaire survey on smoking behaviour, beliefs and attitudes of 2983 children in Scotland indicated that the prevalence of smoking increased from 8 per cent in primary (10 years old) to 30 per cent in secondary school (13 years), an effect that was relatively independent of age alone. More girls than boys smoked within the secondary schools (36 per cent versus 25 per cent). A small number of variables which were found by discriminant function analysis to distinguish between smokers and non-smokers included parental permissiveness, peer example, school alienation and actual school attended.
