Abstract

The creation of a Single European Market (SEM) is watched with great apprehension by the Third World because the question of access to this huge market is of great significance to its exporters. The book offers a detailed overview of the problems that the SEM poses to the Third World and in particular, the problems faced by the African, ASEAN and Latin American countries. The analysis of SEM's impact on the Third World is complicated by the effects of the re-entry of Eastern Europe into the world economy and the need to accommodate these countries' products. Restructuring of Eastern Europe could also divert the West's financial flows away from the Third World. Finally, the book highlights the implications for the international trading system of SEM's tendency bo bypass the multilateral organisations.
