Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to shed some light on how and why mental health facilities are located where they are, and to evaluate how British health service planners have dealt with the problem of where to locate these facilities. The issues are illustrated by a case study of services for the elderly, severely mentally infirm (ESMI) in Lancashire. The study area coincides with the now-defunct Lancashire Area Health Authority and is part of the North Western Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) in northern England.
