Abstract

Although Dickens tried to unify his necessarily episodic novels to some extent, he was never afraid to exploit the freedom that serialisation gave him to introduce new material if he felt like it, to change the course of his novel if he thought this would improve sales, to alter characters drastically if this could be of use to him, and to insert fictional commentaries on questions of the day that immediately interested him.
