Abstract

Unsurprisingly, Dickens’ increasingly sober view of life in his later works forced him to create villains who were no longer mere stereotypes, or black figures from popular melodrama. Although the black-and-white moral judge- ments remain, the view of life is harsher, for all its restraint, when murderers may be seemingly ordinary people.
