Abstract

India is often seen and described as a subcontinent and not a peninsula because of its vast lands, which blur its ocean frontiers. The peninsular character of India and its dependence on maritime traffic give the sea a dominant influence on its destiny. However, a one-sided view of India’s security, with an exclusive focus on north-west frontiers overlooked the oceanic environment and its advantages and disadvantages. Sardar KM Panikkar had the vision to understand peninsular India’s oceanic navigation legacy and wrote extensively for Indian policymakers.
