Omission of Indian National Army (INA) and Netaji: A Tale of Political Expediency Over Historical Legacy
Abstract
India is gearing up to celebrate the 127 th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (23 January 1897), a leader whose contribution to India’s independence is central but unfortunately neglected. Equally important is the role of the Azad Hind Fauj or the Indian National Army, which fought against the might of the British Empire. The Nehruvian state dealt the INA fighters a very raw deal. We are also commemorating the 75 th Republic Day, an occasion that serves as a moment for reflection and remembrance and a source of pride for every Indian. Every such occasion of national celebration provides an opportunity to honour our history and the sacrifices of the INA freedom fighters.
