Abstract

The arrangement of various operations rooms and control of fighters from control stations known as fighter control gave birth to the skill called ‘fighter controlling’ , wherein the ground controllers would scramble fighters in time, based on the filtered inputs from radars and then provide the processed inputs to the airborne fighters to enable them to pick up and destroy enemy aircraft. In a well-defined manner, the position of all the aircraft would be plotted on a large-sized table and the air picture presented for analysis and tactical actions. Fighter controllers are known by different names in different air forces across the globe. Air weapon controller is the term used in Canada and the UK; air defence controller is used in Pakistan; while Air Battle Manager (ABM) is the term used by the US Air Force(USAF).
