Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarines
Abstract
The cornerstone of any deterrence strategy is the capability to retaliate for any adverse act of physical damage or coercion or blackmail. In other words, one must have the military forces required to carry out threats if certain red lines are crossed. During the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union introduced deterrence at the nuclear level. Both countries feared the nuclear capability of each other. The fear of annihilation forced both Washington and Moscow to build a credible nuclear deterrent force in order to execute a guaranteed and effective response to any aggression.
