How Should India's Silent Guardian Sail?
Abstract
Squeezed cheek by jowl between two nuclear adversaries, India is in a challenging neighbourhood. Islamabad’s and Beijing’s deep and covert nuclear cooperation compounds New Delhi’s threat perception. Therefore, to create a robust nuclear deterrent, India has embarked on developing an underwater retaliatory option. The history of the SSBN programmes of the United States, Russia, United Kingdom and France offer many lessons for India in matters relating to operating posture, including adjacent issues like the targeting strategy and reliable Command, Control and Communication (3C) system.
