Abstract

My purpose in this paper is to discuss the applicability of psychological concepts of self-control or self-management to depression in children as a means of preventing depression in adulthood. I plan to outline the nature of models of self-management, their applicability to depression and their advantages in developing preventive strategies in children. I will briefly describe our model of self-management and then summarize some research findings from a series of psychopathology studies of childhood depression. Based on these ideas and a small amount of data, I want to suggest some strategies for preventions of depression. Finally I want to suggest some directions for future research.
