Abstract

Many architects start their practice designing private residences or with even smaller commissions, such as extensions or loft conversions. Some never depart from this scope of work. According to the Architects’ Council of Europe’s 2018 report, ‘There were 7,515 architectural practices in the UK: 4,407 of these were sole practitioners and a further 981 had just two staff.’ 1 So according to these numbers, around 72% of all practices stick to small commissions and never grow beyond this.
