Abstract

Fergus Feilden and Edmund Fowles, of Feilden Fowles, were friends from their student days and share numerous interests and passions, having both been involved in building projects before joining the architecture school. In addition to a keen interest in architecture, they share interests in ecology and cycling. With this shared ethos, alongside their education, they designed their first project as a side job, an activity that they continued as they worked for other practices, to gain experience. This meant that the duo left university not only with a built reference, but also with the skillset of builders, something that many of their peers would only experience years later. ‘Our passion and interest was always in making. We did not want to be paper architects, doing competition after competition. We are interested in the dirty end of architecture, the craftsmanship and being on site,’ explains Fowles.
