Abstract
Henri Tajfel has touched the lives, both professionally and personally, of all of us who have contributed to this book. In the autumn of 1981 I took up my first lecturing appointment—it was at Bristol University where I had been a postgraduate since 1978. I was required primarily to replace Henri Tajfel who was on leave, and my main responsibility was to teach his advanced social psychology course to final year students. I still clearly recall making the sad announcement in this class, Henri’s class, that social psychology had lost one of its greatest scholars and one of its most effective champions.
