Abstract

In this study stress is investigated as a complex state to which several phenomena contribute, not a phenomenon sui generis. This state typically originates in the context of goal-directed activities. A prerequisite for the occurrence of stress seems to be a perceived imbalance between subjective task demand and a person’s subjective capacity; this has also been pointed out in earlier conceptions ( Lazarus, 1966 ; McGrath, 1970 , 1976 ).
