Abstract

In the late 1960s and early 1970s public interest in changes in the natural and physical environment showed a dramatic increase. Apart from the expressed concern for the preservation of landscape and wildlife, the protection of amenity, and the abatement of pollution, there have been those who have suggested that the future of modern industrial society is threatened by environmental disaster. A perceived crisis of such dimensions has led to many proposals, even blueprints, for radical social changes most of which involve a complete rejection of the structures and goals of modern industrial capitalism.
