Abstract

This chapter focuses on two genres of Bible-related film: Jesus movies and Christ-figure films. It discusses the definitions of the genres, provides examples, and addresses some of the major themes as well as interpretive issues. Among the themes relevant to the Jesus movies are Christology, the representation of Jews and Judaism, and the fraught relationship between film and faith. Discussion of Christ-figure films focuses on the variety of genres in which the Christ-figure motif can be found. Each section concludes with an assessment of the genre.
