Abstract

This concluding chapter pulls together the main narrative that this book has developed in the preceding chapters and highlights this book’s three main arguments. First, it emphasises the importance of acknowledging the ‘invisible’ labour of everyday humanitarians and the role that hosting-at-home, as a specific form and space of everyday humanitarianism, plays globally in responses to displacement. Second, it shows how understanding the home as a site of humanitarian hospitality reveals the various ways in which hosts perform a public duty in a private space. Finally, this conclusion draws attention to how hosting-at-home is connected to wider structures of power associated with the ‘international humanitarian system’, holding the potential for both reproducing and contesting these. This chapter concludes with reflections on hosting-at-home within a changing humanitarian landscape.
