Abstract

This introductory chapter establishes the central argument of this book: that power as domination operates not only through violence but also through lies and deception, often more insidious and undertheorized. It outlines the book’s theoretical and methodological foundations and itscase studies – ranging from the conquest of the Americas to the climate crisis – highlighting recurring patterns in how lies and deception enable and sustain domination. In doing so, it positions this book as a critical intervention into the field of historical sociology, offering new ways to analyse how domination is achieved and maintained.
