The Funds Fundamentals
Abstract
This chapter analyses the discourses employed by the Hubert Bals Fund (HBF) and World Cinema Fund (WCF) and their impact on Latin American cinema. These funds claim to promote daring films with strong artistic profiles and cultural identities, seeking unique and groundbreaking projects. However, the terms “world cinema” and “authenticity” are critiqued for their homogenising and colonial connotations, potentially leading to a “festival film formula” that filmmakers may adopt. The chapter also examines the evolution of selection committees, which, initially Eurocentric, now include regional representatives to provide local knowledge. The selection process, facing numerous submissions, relies on subjective intuition and collective discussion, balancing a project&s;s artistic vision with its financial feasibility.
