Abstract

This chapter explores the contribution that the theory of affordances can make to digital ethnography by understanding the role that different technologies may play in research practice and the research participant relationship. By looking at the action possibilities afforded by the materiality of different technologies and how they are used and interpreted in different contexts, this chapter provides a framework for choosing the right tools in our research, as well as being prepared to have our expectations of what these tools will afford challenged in practice.
