Case study: work, play, and questioning the binary in EVE Online
Abstract
This chapter charts the destabilization of categories inherent in the construction and description of virtual worlds and the ethnographies produced of them. Most commonly, virtual worlds are held in distinction from actual worlds through this very demarcation, of being virtual. Far from replicating the binaries often proffered, my work attempts to challenge this notion, taking discoveries made during fieldwork and attempting to apply them more generally to the conceptualization of the field itself.
