Abstract

Geospatial technology, geographic information systems (GIS), and mapping offer ethnographers a powerful set of tools in the spirit of anthropologist Clifford Geertz’s notion of thick description. GIS evokes the real-world shape of the Earth, allowing researchers to paint a rich picture of people and culture. Maps assume a vibrant diversity of forms from modern web maps to ancient mnemonic practices. But there is a risk of misrepresentation when translating multidimensional space onto a flat surface. The application of geospatial processes to disaster response provides an illustrative example of how GIS can be used to represent communities and inform decision-making.
