Abstract

The chapter identifies algorithms as basic “if A, then B” instructions that have become key technologies of contemporary societies due to increasing digitalization and computing power. It describes how they achieve their effects and the importance of their opacity. It then discusses how best to analyze algorithms, the limits and challenges of doing so, the importance of a socio-material perspective, and the role of ethnographic methods in particular.
