Abstract

This brief section explains the concept of the public, laying out its history and basic descriptive and normative components, including its role in political theory as well as the way it operates within different cultures. It discusses how the internet and social media can be thought of as publics, or as threatening publics, and how structural transformations in the public sphere, such as platforms and social media algorithms, change the nature of the power of the public.
