Abstract

Based on ethnographic research, this case study explores the digital media participation of Shipibo-Konibos—an indigenous group in the Peruvian Amazon. This study draws attention to Shipibos’ avoidance of “selfies” online, fearing shamans could exploit these photos to cause harm. Through fieldwork in Pucallpa and Native territories, this research identifies how broader socio-political and cultural contexts shape Shipibos’ online interactions. Partnerships between tech companies and nation-states boost the preference for particular digital platforms, raising questions about digital equity. Within the more affordable Facebook environment, Shipibos engage in discussions on platform use, addressing concerns about digital safety and potential threats.
