Hotels, Residential, and Airbnb
Abstract
This chapter examines the evolving landscape of hotel and residential security in an era where hospitality venues have become prominent soft targets for terrorism, crime, and cyberattacks. Once symbolized by a discreet “hotel detective,” modern hotels now attract hostile actors due to their public accessibility, iconic status, and concentration of valuable data. The author traces the shift from pre-9/11 complacency to the contemporary reality of armed assaults, bombings, and data breaches, emphasizing that security in many western and developing-world hotels remains reactive or purely cosmetic. Using case studies from Algeria, Libya, Yemen, and Pakistan, the chapter underscores systemic failures in risk assessment, physical protection, and leadership oversight. Travelers are urged to adopt a proactive, self-reliant approach to personal security—from selecting hotels based on location and standoff distance rather than amenities, to conducting arrival-time assessments, verifying room integrity, and maintaining situational awareness. Practical guidance extends to fire safety, emergency evacuation, and deception routines that reduce personal exposure. The section on residential security highlights layered defenses—fences, guards, lighting, alarms, and safe rooms—alongside the human factor of vigilance and discipline. The discussion concludes with insights on emerging risks in Airbnb-style accommodations, where decentralized standards necessitate individual due diligence and privacy awareness. Overall, the chapter reinforces that effective travel security is neither assumed nor outsourced; it is planned, observed, and practiced continuously by the traveler.
