Insurance Considerations
Abstract
This chapter emphasizes the critical role of insurance in travel preparation, particularly in safeguarding against unexpected health and financial risks abroad. It outlines the key types of insurance travelers should evaluate—travel insurance, travel health insurance, and medical evacuation insurance—each offering different levels of protection. Travelers are encouraged to review their existing health and homeowner policies to determine what coverage may already extend internationally, and to assess supplemental needs based on destination, activities, and health conditions. The chapter details essential factors for evaluating insurance policies, such as exclusions for preexisting conditions, high-risk activities, pregnancy complications, psychiatric emergencies, and acts of war or terrorism. It highlights the importance of understanding out-of-network policies, preauthorization requirements, and the availability of 24-hour physician-backed support centers. Additionally, it addresses the financial realities of paying for healthcare abroad, where upfront payment is often required, and underscores the value of documentation and consular assistance. Medical evacuation insurance is presented as particularly vital, especially for travelers to remote or resource-limited areas, as evacuation costs can exceed $100,000. The chapter concludes with guidance on selecting reliable insurance providers and consulting reputable resources such as the CDC, US Department of State, and Forbes Advisor. Overall, it underscores that careful insurance planning is essential for managing medical, logistical, and financial contingencies while traveling internationally.
