Changing Temporal Frameworks as Doxa-Making
Abstract
This chapter examines how competing actors in postmigration communities struggle not only over what to remember but also when to remember it. After introducing the concept of historicity, I analyze family interviews to reveal how socialist-era achievements were recast as either communist complicity or proto-victimhood narratives in post-1989 Poland. The chapter concludes that control over temporal boundaries—defining which events remain in living memory and which migrate to archival oblivion—is as morally charged as disputes over contents of memory narratives.
