Abstract

College is a pathway to success for students who are the first in their families to pursue postsecondary education. The Upward Bound program provides additional preparation and support through culturally responsive tutoring and supplemental instruction to ensure success for first-generation college-bound students. This case addresses how tutoring with a focus on literacy can help first-generation college-bound students maneuver through the college application process and improve academic outcomes to move upward and onward as they transition to postsecondary education.
