Abstract

Clinical supervision is a vital professional support mechanism in nursing that fosters emotional well-being, reflective practice, and professional development. Despite its established presence for over thirty years, the provision and implementation of clinical supervision across the UK remains inconsistent. The COVID-19 pandemic re-emphasised the critical role of clinical supervision in supporting nurses through emotional and professional challenges. Restorative clinical supervision, combined with effective preceptorship, fosters resilience, reduces burnout, and enhances patient care. The Welsh Government&s;s mandate for clinical supervision sets a precedent, while ongoing efforts across the UK aim to embed supervision culturally within healthcare. Ensuring protected time, developing skilled supervisors, and prioritising emotional support are essential steps for sustaining a stable and experienced nursing workforce. This chapter explores the concept, benefits, challenges, and evolving models of clinical supervision, emphasising its role in supporting nurses emotionally and enhancing patient care.
