Conservation and people
Abstract
This chapter discusses several issues concerning the relationship between nature conservation and people. It begins by examining the connection between conservation and global health through the One Health approach. This framework enables an exploration of a potential limitation to conservation regarding species that may pose a serious threat to global health. The chapter then considers the role that human preferences and the charisma of certain species play in shaping conservation priorities. The third issue explored is the place of people in protected nature. Two alternative approaches to traditional conservation are introduced and discussed here: new conservation and convivial conservation. Finally, the chapter addresses the relationship between virtue and conservation—specifically, how cultivating a virtuous relationship with nature can contribute both to human flourishing and conservation.
