Abstract

You hear it before you see it: the sound of thousands of tons of marble blocks being coaxed out of the landscape with iron tools, pulleys, cranes, and hundreds of metres of rope. As you glide past, you see that the massive Roman merchant ships, laden with their quarry and ready to sail, are dangerously low in the water. The black marble shines in the sun and the shouts of the men fade as you continue north along the western coast of the peninsula. You hear a youth ask aloud, “Why didn't we stop? I thought we were going to Tainaron?” Someone responds before you have a chance: “We are – the new Tainaron.”
