Ending a lease
Abstract
A key consideration for a landlord and tenant is how a lease may come to an end. Either party may wish to end the lease before its end date, or one party may wish the lease to continue for as long as possible. This chapter explores the key methods by which a lease may come to an end, whether after or before its specified end date. It also examines the statutory protection provided to some business tenants, enabling them to remain in the premises after the lease end date or request a new lease over the same premises. This chapter is relevant to commercial leases only.
