Abstract

This chapter presents this book’s overall approach to our exploration of social impact for cultural organizations. Structural functionalism and adaptive response are introduced for our theoretical framework, while key perspectives (organizational development, program planning and implementation, resource allocation, and evaluation and assessment) provide the framework for investigating key issues, concepts, and practices. The concept of social impact is situated within the history of corporate social responsibility programs. Current issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion and climate change are discussed, along with other topics such as community engagement, education, health, art policy and advocacy, and economic impact.
