Plurality of unknown futures
Abstract
The Practice of The Third Thing , an arts-based research collaboration between Nithya Iyer and Vlad Mizikov, advances an inquiry into embodied speculation as a methodological orientation. Their practice foregrounds the entanglement of lived phenomena and improvisational impulses that arise within architectural sites that carry socio-historic significance. This conversational chapter situates their series An Experiment in Intervals as a speculative intervention into the spatio-temporal textures of former imperial and modernist utopias, arguing that such sites are haunted not solely by sedimented histories and their dissonant promises but also by the indeterminacy of their own diffraction into multiple, as-yet-unrealised futures that are experienced through ephemeral intervals.
