Abstract

“Obtain a yield”, the second design principle of permaculture adopted in this book, offers a lens to reconsider the forms and potentials of art institutions. Yields are not only material but also immaterial, emerging through networks of reciprocity, kinship, care, and sharing. These hospitable relationships enable flows of resources, capacities, and attention that benefit all participants – hosts and guests alike. After outlining what a hospitable art institution might entail, the chapter offers a brief presentation of the Jan van Eyck Academie and The Listening Biennial, followed by a deeper analysis of their institutional practices. Each case is explored through the lens of hospitality, emphasising how relationality can produce mutual yields, transforming the institution and its engagements.
