Abstract

The general purpose of this chapter is to describe the early history of experiments designed to test the hypothesis of interpersonal expectancy effects. Interpersonal expectancy effects refer to the effects of one person’s expectations for the behavior of another person on that other person’s behavior. Early experiments on interpersonal expectancy effects were designed to learn whether psychological experiments might unintentionally influence their research subjects to respond in accordance with the experimenters’ hypotheses or expectations.
