Getting the Story: A Longitudinal Study of Parental Styles in Eliciting Narratives and Developing Narrative Skill
Abstract
The structure of children’s personal narratives reflects their culture (Michaels, chap. 8 in this vol.; Schieffelin & Eisenberg, 1984 ) and their age ( Peterson & McCabe, 1983 ). In this chapter, we intend to show that it also reflects habitual interactions with their parents. We intend to establish evidence supporting a social interactionist account of narrative development.
