Phonetic Segmentation and Recoding in the Beginning Reader
Abstract
The beginning reader–the child of six or thereabout–is an accomplished speaker-hearer of his language and has been for a year or more. Why, then, should he find it hard to read, as so many children do? Why does he not learn to read as naturally and inevitably as he learned to speak and listen? What other abilities, not required for mastery of speech, must he have if he is to cope with language in its written form?
