The moral economy of the people by François-Joseph L'Ange
Abstract
At the time of the 1789 Revolution, François-Joseph L’Ange (1743–1793) developed the foundations of an original moral economy of the people. He summarized the principles in a pamphlet published in 1793, Le Remède à tout. The outcome of his thinking, the Remède was just as much the result of his political commitment, at the time of the Revolution, within what can be described as the original municipal democracy of Lyon. A few months later, following the terrible siege of Lyon, he was guillotined by the Jacobins. Later, Jean Jaurès hailed L’Ange’s work as the expression of a singular utopia: a radical form of political, social and economic democracy.
