Making Assessment Work in Practice
Abstract
Assessment in early years practice is an ongoing, structured process designed to provide meaningful insights into children’s learning and development. Unlike observations, which are fluid and spontaneous, assessments are intentional, scheduled and focused. I suggest that they are typically carried out weekly with three focus children at a time. This rhythm ensures deeper analysis and strengthens the link between assessment and planning. High-quality assessment relies on collaboration: the whole team contributes observations, while the team leader or key worker generally have responsibility for interpreting them. Through this reflective process, practitioners identify children’s strengths and developmental challenges, enabling responsive planning that adapts learning opportunities and environments. Constructive assessment writing is essential, balancing strengths with areas for growth and using supportive language that communicates clearly with parents and professionals. A step-by-step cycle provides a practical framework for consistency. Ultimately, assessment is about professional judgement and responsiveness, ensuring every child’s learning journey is valued and supported.
