Abstract

This chapter introduces observation as a central element of meaningful teaching and learning, reframing it as a tool for understanding rather than simply recording. Too often, observation is reduced to paperwork or focused on checking off what children know, missing its deeper purpose: to see, hear and respond to each child’s learning journey. Here, the What, So What, Now What framework is presented as a simple yet powerful cycle for observation, assessment and planning. Rooted in Borton’s reflective model, it restores clarity and confidence by guiding educators to describe what they see, analyse what it means and plan how to respond. Real-life training experience shows that once practitioners grasp the first step, which is how and what to record, everything else begins to flow. The chapter also explores the role of tools and technology, emphasising that while formats and apps may vary, the process itself comes first. This approach shifts observation from a burdensome task to a purposeful and joyful practice and sets the foundation for the chapters that follow.
