Abstract

This chapter addresses the challenges of managing observation in large and busy early years or primary settings, where the risk of inconsistency, overwhelmed staff or overlooking certain children is high. It introduces a practical system designed to ensure every child is seen while keeping the process manageable and meaningful for practitioners. The distinction between incidental and focused observations is clarified, with incidental observations capturing spontaneous learning moments for all children and focused observations providing deeper insights into a small weekly group of children. A step-by-step guide outlines how to select focus children, observe them across the week and engage the whole team in shared responsibility supported by simple organisational tools. The importance of quality over quantity is emphasised, with assessment deliberately separated from observation to avoid premature judgements. The system works in cycles, ensuring equity and balance across the group while giving children time to work towards achievable next steps. Ultimately, this approach ensures every child is valued and that observation becomes a sustainable, child-centred practice.
