Abstract

This chapter offers Josephus’ eyewitness account of the Jewish Revolt and Rome’s crushing victory. Once a Jewish rebel commander, Josephus joined the Romans and wrote The Jewish War to explain the war to Roman audiences and condemn extremist resistance. Selections describe Roman military discipline, the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple, Titus’ and Vespasian’s triumph in Rome, and the final stand at Masada. Josephus’ narrative shows Roman imperial power at its height and the catastrophic consequences of revolt.
