Pliny the Younger
Abstract
This chapter features letters by Pliny the Younger, a lawyer, orator, and imperial official whose correspondence offers a vivid glimpse into Roman life under Trajan. His eyewitness accounts of the eruption of Vesuvius combine personal detail with historical observation, while his exchanges with the emperor Trajan address how to deal with Christians and illuminate the challenges of provincial governance. Together, these texts reveal imperial communication, legal policy, and the intellectual culture of the early second century.
