Suetonius
Abstract
This chapter presents selections from Suetonius’ Lives of the Twelve Caesars , vivid biographies that mix archival evidence with gossip and scandal. His portraits of Julius Caesar, Augustus, and Claudius explore both public achievements and private lives, from Caesar’s assassination to Augustus’ correspondence with Livia and Claudius’ mocked eccentricities. Suetonius offers a rich, sometimes sensational view of imperial power and personality, preserving invaluable documents and anecdotes that illuminate the character of Rome’s early emperors.
