Appian
Abstract
This chapter presents selections from Appian’s Civil Wars , the most important surviving source for Rome’s turbulent century of internal conflict. Writing in Greek under the Antonines, Appian traces the collapse of the Republic from the reforms and assassinations of the Gracchi brothers through the Social War and the rise of strongmen who shattered senatorial power. His vivid account explores the causes and consequences of civil strife and reflects his belief in the stability of monarchy over republican chaos.
