Herodian
Abstract
This chapter presents selections from Herodian’s History of the Empire , the only complete account written in Greek of the turbulent third century to survive in full. Writing as an eyewitness, Herodian charts the rapid turnover of emperors, from the rise and brutal rule of Maximinus Thrax to the chaotic rivalries that followed. His vivid narrative captures civil wars, senatorial resistance, and the assassinations that culminated in Gordian III’s rise, revealing a conservative vision of imperial order amid crisis.
