Abstract

This chapter introduces inscriptions as vital historical sources that reveal Rome’s laws, religion, politics, and imperial ideology. Readers encounter public documents from the Twelve Tables and senatorial decrees to triumphal arches honoring emperors. Together these texts trace Rome’s evolution from a city-state governed by codified law to an empire proclaiming its achievements in stone and bronze, showing how Romans recorded—and shaped—their own history through official acts and monumental display.
